Mike Nichols b. 1931

Born in Berlin, Germany, Mike Nichols is one of nine people in history to have won all the major American entertainment awards: an Oscar, a Grammy, an Emmy, and a Tony. He and actress Elaine May formed a successful comedy duo before Nichols began directing. His 1963 production of Neil Simon's Barefoot in the Park ran for 1,530 performances. Nichols went on to direct or produce many other Broadway hits, including The Odd Couple (1965) then branched into directing films with Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in 1966. He won an Oscar for Best Director for The Graduate in 1967. Two of his films Working Girl and Silkwood made the American Film Institute's list of the Hundred Most Inspiring Movies of All Time.
