A pioneering researcher in the field of cholesterol metabolism, biochemist Joseph L. Goldstein shared the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with his colleague, Michael Stuart Brown, for their groundbreaking work in describing how the human body regulates cholesterol metabolism. Born in Sumter, South Carolina, Goldstein honed his skills in molecular biology at the National Institutes of Health from 1968 to 1970, and later went on to study genetic lipid disorders as a Special NIH Fellow in Medical Genetics at the University of Washington in Seattle. He currently serves as the Paul J. Thomas Professor of Medicine and Genetics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Dallas.
