Office of Senator Joseph Lieberman
A U.S. senator from Connecticut since 1988, Joe Lieberman was the first Jewish candidate named to the presidential ticket of a major American political party. An observant Jew, Lieberman was the Democratic Party's candidate for vice president in the 2000 presidential election, running on a ticket headed by Al Gore. The Gore-Lieberman ticket won a plurality of votes but lost the contested election in a controversial decision by the U.S. Supreme Court. Now serving as an "Independent Democrat" in his fourth Senate term, Lieberman is known as a staunch supporter of Israel, a hawk on the Iraq war, and an advocate for free trade and abortion rights.
