Julius Ochs Adler 1892-1955

Brigadier General Julius Ochs Adler led a varied career ranging from distinguished army service to journalist. In World War I, he led an infantry battalion on the Western Front in France, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross, the Purple Heart, the Silver Star with Oak Leaf Clusters, and the French Croix de Guerre for his efforts. After the war, he followed his uncle Adolph Ochs' footsteps into the newspaper business, and became the president and publisher of The Chatanooga Times. In 1935, Ochs Adler became the general manager of the paper his uncle had owned, The New York Times. During World War II, Ochs Adler commanded the 77th Infantry Division, which defended Hawaii from 1941 to 1944.
