Michael Kidd attended New York's City College with plans to become a chemical engineer, but a scholarship to the School of American Ballet drew him in an entirely different direction. After touring with Lincoln Kirstein's Ballet Caravan, Kidd launched a career in choreography that led to five Tony Awards for Broadway blockbusters: Finian's Rainbow, Guys and Dolls, Can-Can, Li'l Abner, and Destry Rides Again. A highlight of Kidd's film work was Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, a 1954 musical set on the American frontier. Kidd choreographed for such world-class dancers as Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse, and Danny Kaye.
