Shlomo Carlebach 1925-1994

The music heard at many modern Jewish weddings and life-cycle events owes its origins to Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, whose songwriting career spanned almost three decades. Known as Reb Shlomo and "The Singing Rabbi," Carlebach embraced a musical style combining the warmth of Hasidism with the words of Torah and other teachings. Carlebach bridged traditional Judaism and popular American folk music. He recorded more than 25 albums and performed all over the world, from New York's Carnegie Hall to the Opera Palace in St. Petersburg. "Am Yisroel Chai" ("The People of Israel Live") is considered his most famous song.
